Rian Johnson will direct Star Wars: Episode VIII

Looper– and (sometimes) Breaking Bad-director, Rian Johnson has been attached to direct Star Wars: Episode VIII, and pen the concept for Star Wars: Episode IX, according to Deadline

Since the news of this is both so fresh and big, it’s important to remember that somethings are still up in the air. Different reports say different things on Johnsons involvement with Episode IX, but I feel it’s fair game to bet he won’t be directing both of them – seeing as JJ Abrams only gets one. The news comes not long after the announcement that Godzilla-director, Gareth Edwards and Chronicle-director, Josh Trank will direct two spinoff-movies in the franchise.

Johnson made is writer-director debut with the indie-masterpiece, Brick, in 2005 and later made the not-as-perfected, The Brothers Bloom in 2008. When he returned to cinema in 2011 with Looper, it didn’t take long for his name to make the rounds on different blogs. He even directed three episodes of Breaking Bad, and when I saw Ozymandias live last year, my heart skipped a beat when I saw he directed it. He is a talented writer-director, is what I am trying to say.

While I have full faith in JJ Abrams and Episode VII, I can’t help to feel like Johnson is a much more inspired choice to write and direct a Star Wars movie. I’ve been waiting on news about his next project, and although I would love to see an original concept again, I think he – as Gareth Edwards before him – deserves a shot at a big Hollywood-production to get his name out there. Edwards debut monster movie, Monsters, is fantastic, but was mostly unknown until now.  It will be exciting to see where it goes from here.
