Thelma earns Joachim Trier his biggest opening weekend at box office

Joachim Trier’s Thelma has officially earned the director his biggest opening weekend at the box office in Norway to date. With 13,144 tickets sold, it beat out Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! with almost 10,000 tickets (3,660).

This number means Thelma will most likely pass Trier’s previous movie, Louder Than Bombs this week—which only sold 21,210 tickets in 2015. It also sets it up to pass Reprise (48,562) and Oslo 31. August (64,109) by the end of the year.

Thelma has garnered huge praise from Norwegian and international critics alike, and the audience reactions seem equally positive thus far.

It seems Joachim Trier has finally gotten the recognition he deserves from the average theatergoer, and it will be exciting to see how the numbers look at the end of the year. Hopefully, this means Trier will be allowed to continue to make just the movies he wants to make for years to come.

Numbers are taken from Film & Kino:

Louder Than Bombs (02.10.15) 21,210

Oslo, 31. August (31.08.11) 64,109

Reprise (08.09.06) 48,562
